In December, the Michel Serres Library is offering PhD students several training sessions on literature searching, open science, and research integrity.

The library is offering new training sessions for PhD students in December. These sessions will be held in person only and delivered in English. The hours spent attending the two training sessions on literature searching and open science may be credited by your doctoral school.

With the ever-growing volume of information available and the diversity of ways to access research findings, a good understanding of literature search methods and tools is more essential than ever. More broadly, with the advent of AI-powered tools to support state-of-the-art reviews, these skills are key to navigating the scientific publishing landscape.

Topics covered:

•    Literature search tools: bibliographic databases, academic search engines, publishers’ platforms, subject-specific databases, and more.
•    AI as a tool for state-of-the-art reviews: tools, benefits, and limitations.
•    Using reference management software (Zotero).

Trainers: Stéphanie Lamaison and Nicolas Jardin (Centrale Lyon Library)

Over the past twenty years, open science has evolved from a movement of researchers advocating open access to publications into an institutional policy supported by the MESRE (French Ministry of Higher Education and Research), research institutions, and research funding bodies. In the meantime, its principles and objectives have been translated into a wide range of increasingly common research practices, some of which have become essential, such as open access publishing, depositing publications in HAL, and developing data management plans.

This training session will focus on these practices, covering publications as well as research data and code, and introduce the tools available to help researchers implement them.

Topics covered:

  • Open science: definition, national context, and practical implications.
  • Publishing in open access: tips and key considerations.
  • Managing, sharing, promoting, and protecting research source code and software.
  • Visit to the Computing Centre at École Centrale de Lyon.

Trainers: Nicolas Jardin (ECL Library) and Mattéo Camier (Head of the Computing Center).

To complement the open science training session, we are offering a “best of” selection of two escape games created by the Centrale Lyon Library in 2019 and 2024: Closed Access, which focuses on open access to scientific publications, and Data Curator, which explores research data management and sharing.

The session will last 1 hour and 15 minutes, including a 15-minute briefing and debriefing and 1 hour of gameplay.

You can register for the training course via the ADUM doctoral platform.
